Our brand

The SmartCal logo and several visual ideas on this site, including the dark interface and the fine lines, draw inspiration from Person of Interest, the television series created by Jonathan Nolan.

A story about two AIs

The series follows a conflict between two artificial intelligences: one built to protect people, the other to control them. It ends with the benevolent AI prevailing. That ending reflects what we hope for every AI system, including the ones we build.

Why some elements may look familiar

Some elements here, such as a network that seems to watch or records that trace how a result was made, may at first recall the controlling AI of that story. They are designed to prove the opposite: the Glass Room, which we are building, is designed to show its work instead of hiding it, SmartCal stays responsible for what it publishes and decides, and we collect nothing without a stated reason.

Design principles

  • Transparency through the Glass Room. The Glass Room, which we are building, is designed to show how a result was made, step by step, instead of asking you to trust a black box.
  • People stay accountable. SmartCal and its people remain responsible for what we publish and for the decisions we make. Where a person reviewed an item, its Glass Room record is designed to say so.
  • Privacy by default. We collect nothing without a stated reason. The Privacy Policy explains what, why and for how long.
  • Accessibility. We aim for pages that show their content before JavaScript runs, work with a keyboard and give a text version of optional visuals.
  • Bilingual parity. We aim to offer every page in English and Canadian French with the same substance.
